Discover the most spectacular view in Picton – Tirohanga Track

If spectacular views are your jam, then walking the Tirohanga Track is how you achieve the most spectacular view in Picton.

This short, but steep hike, is worth the sweat you’ll get up. From the viewpoint, you’ll have an awe-inspiring panoramic view of Picton township, Waikawa Bay, and Shakespeare Bay, that then extends out over the Queen Charlotte Sound. It truly is nothing short of spectacular, and well worth the effort.

This is perfect activity if you’ve arrived in Picton on a cruise ship – allowing you to stretch your legs, and get a better view of where you’ve sailed.

Practical tips for walking the Tirohanga Track

  1. Getting there: There are two entry points to the track – one from Newgate Street, the other from Garden Terrace. (It’s an easy walk to Newgate Street if you’re staying in Picton township). You could also do the loop, starting at one entry, and finishing at the other.
  2. Track length: The hike to the summit is about 1.2km – but it is steep. Depending on your level of fitness, it could take anywhere from 30 – 50 minutes to reach the summit. A bit less going down. 😉
  3. Track condition: The track is well formed, and easy to walk, but can be slippery when wet. It’s quite shaded, so a nice walk on a hot day.
  4. Elevation gain: 428 metres
  5. What to take: I would consider a water bottle, and camera, essentials. If you use hiking poles, they would be handy, especially in the wet. But not required. It’d also be a nice spot for a picnic.

So – don’t hesitate. Go discover for yourself this spectacular view. It’s very inspiring, achievable for most, and great exercise.

It would also be a great place to watch the sunset.

It’s a trail I love to take friends on, when they’re visiting. So – just do it!
